In my work I am commenting on traditional religious art from an outsider point of view – outside the patriarchal aspects of Catholicism and Orthodoxy, outside the traditional exhibition space, and outside religious locations such as churches.
These outside spaces are often female-dominated and domestic, and the art produced in them is folky, cheap, and kitschy – mass produced, but also deeply personal and individual.
I am trying to subvert these traditional spaces by emphasising the specific, intimate, female nature of my art in painting thick, fleshy self-portraits and nudes, but also allowing the viewer to take it home, destroy it, and fundamentally breach its boundaries.
